The effects of smoking on your relationships
It’s not my intention to give you a hard time or lecture you. I’m simply giving you a non-smoking male perspective of attraction and relationships. It’s my intention to offer you an insight into some issues you may not have noticed or realised. If you want to continue to smoke then that’s entirely your choice.
In a 2005 study it was found that in the UK the number of male smokers was approximately 26%. That means 26 men in every 100 were smokers. Incidentally the number of female smokers in the UK was approximately 23%.
Let’s look at this from the opposite perspective. If 26% of men in the UK are smokers - that means 74% are non-smokers. If we round the figures for simplicity this equates to 3 men in 4 being non-smokers. The likelihood of a non-smoking man purposely seeking out a smoking woman for a relationship is slim. Thus if you are a female smoker yourself, it’s quite probable that your smoking habit is closing off 3 out of 4 of your ‘potential guy’ options. It’s a sobering thought isn’t it?
I’d like to draw to your attention something that happens quite regularly, not only in my life but also in the lives of my non-smoking male friends. I’ll be out and about doing my thing and notice a woman who draws my attention. Being a man it doesn’t take long to convince me I find a woman attractive so I decide to go over and introduce myself. However, it’s sometimes the case that as I approach she either picks up a cigarette or lights one. The attraction wanes almost immediately. I’ve dated smokers before and in all honesty I now find that even as ‘someone else’s habit’ – it’s not worth the hassle. Here’s what I mean:
- The public places a smoker can now go to are so limited (by law) that socialising options for her and her boyfriend are minimal.
- Cigarette smoke smells bad, particularly when it’s stale. It gets into clothes, hair, furniture, carpet, cars… everywhere.
- The female smokers I dated in the past used to ask if they could smoke in my car… and the answer was always ‘no’. For the sake of smoking one cigarette they were happy to make my car stink of stale smoke for weeks to come. However, even though I was decisive in my ‘no smoking in my car’ stance - I always felt a little guilty that I’d refused. This in itself caused tension in the relationship.
- Fortunately I don’t have a cyanide inhaling habit but even if I did I wouldn’t insist my girlfriend joined me every time I fancied a fix. However, smokers do this all the time to non-smokers and in my opinion at least it’s a really selfish thing to do. Nobody is ignorant to the presence of toxic chemicals and carcinogens in cigarette smoke, so smoking in a non-smokers presence is a pretty nasty thing to do.
- The post cigarette kiss is disgusting – it really is. I guess smokers get used to the taste of cigarettes but for the non-smoker it remains very unpleasant.
This is not by any means an exhaustive list. I don’t want to appear like I’m coming across like a complainer because smokers are not an issue in my life anymore. The simplest thing for me to do was to decide that I wouldn’t date smokers at all. I can confirm I’m not the only guy to take this stance so be aware that smoking is probably closing off many of your otherwise potential options. Remember that 3 out of every 4 guys in the UK are non-smokers and many will think like me.
As a closing note in this section I’d like you to have a long term think about your future. Let’s say for example that you meet a wonderful non-smoking guy. He doesn’t mind that you smoke – so you carry on. You end up moving in together and then get married. In due course you have a couple of babies and enjoy watching them grow into infants. Then one day your husband is diagnosed with lung cancer. He’s never smoked in his life, nor does he work with dust or chemicals. It seems therefore that the passive smoke he has inhaled from cigarettes has caused the illness. Eighteen months later, following intrusive medical procedures and a lengthy period of housebound incapacitation – he dies. Your children now have no father. Perhaps you could reassess smoking at that time… but it won’t bring him back. Nor will it undo potential physical damage already inflicted upon your children. Remember that they carry their father’s genetics and vulnerabilities. They’ve also watched their mother smoke and she’s ok… so surely when they reach their teens it’s going to be ok for them to smoke too.
Like I said earlier – I don’t mind if you smoke. It’s entirely your decision. But have a good think about the things you really want and those things you want to avoid. Simply live your life accordingly.
The effects of smoking on your finances
I hope you’re sitting down to read this, especially if finances are reasonably tight for you. I’m going to give you a forecast of what it costs a typical smoker in financial terms.
I’ll give you three examples of people smoking various numbers of cigarettes each day. The numbers of cigarettes we’ll cover are 10/day, 20/day and 40/day. Simply look at the results which best describe your cigarette consumption.
I’m going to assume a standardised price for a pack of 20 cigarettes being £5.00 so that we can use round figures. I appreciate you can buy cheaper or more expensive cigarettes but I think this represents a reasonable average:
10 Cigarettes per Day
1 day £2.50
1 week £17.50
1 month £75.83
3 months £227.50
1 year £910.00
5 years £4,550.00
10 years £9,100.00
20 Cigarettes per Day
1 day £5.00
1 week £35.00
1 month £151.67
3 months £455.00
1 year £1,820.00
5 years £9,100.00
10 years £18,200.00
40 Cigarettes per Day
1 day £10.00
1 week £70.00
1 month £303.33
3 months £910.00
1 year £3,640.00
5 years £18,200.00
10 years £36,400.00
Remember that if you enter a relationship with another smoker you can DOUBLE those figures for the amount of combined money lost. - Painful huh?
The effects of smoking on your health
The chemicals in cigarettes can dehydrate and starve your skin of essential oxygen. Smoking can cause the apparent accelerated aging of skin through discolouration, poor and uneven complexion, lines and wrinkles. The more a woman smokes the faster the skin can seem to age. In later years the skin can become dry and leathery with longer term or heavy smokers developing hollow cheeks.
Smoking can stain teeth yellow. Smoking is the most widespread cause of bad breath. Cigarette smoke can attack the enamel on teeth and the surrounding gums meaning that the average smoker is 150% more likely to lose teeth than a non-smoker.
Smoking lowers physical endurance and causes increased fatigue both during and after physical exercise. Due to residual contaminants in the lungs they function below ideal efficiency. This means that you absorb less oxygen per breathing cycle than a non-smoker. Without oxygen your muscles cannot function correctly and become tired more quickly. Your body also needs to deal with many inhaled gaseous toxins including carbon monoxide, which is not only poisonous but also displaces oxygen within your bloodstream.
Smokers are more likely to store fatty deposits around their waist and upper body. This is associated with heightened risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, breast cancer and cancer of the womb. Smokers are also at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis (thinning of the bone structure) and the chances of becoming incontinent are two fold that of a non-smoker.
A smoker is five times as likely to develop genital warts as a non-smoker. Smoking significantly reduces the chance of a successful fertilisation. The chemicals in smoking increase the chance of a combined contraceptive pill failure. There is an increased chance of menstrual irregularities and painful periods for smokers. The odds of having cervical cancer increase two-fold for smokers.
The effects of smoking on pregnancy
Smoking can be harmful to your ovaries. Women who smoke have up to a 40% reduced chance of conceiving when compared to a non-smoker of the same age. The more cigarettes a woman smokes, the more likely it is she’ll suffer from spontaneous miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Smoking can also increase the likelihood of genetic abnormalities occurring in a woman’s eggs. A non-smoker is almost twice as likely to conceive as a result of IVF in any given time compared to a smoker.

How to stop smoking – The completely guaranteed method
I’m a qualified therapist and I’ve helped many people to stop smoking. Unfortunately I simply don’t have the time to work with people in that capacity anymore, although I’m happy to share with you a successful technique I used. This technique has never failed to deliver the goods. The only time people have failed to stop smoking was when they failed to use the technique.
Like I said at the start of this article – I don’t mind if you continue to smoke. It’s your right and it’s your decision. If you’d like to stop smoking and make the transition to becoming a non-smoker then that too is fine. It simply has to be your decision and YOU need to take full responsibility for your actions.
My technique works and if you abide by its rules you will become a non-smoker in your own time. If you break the rules then you’re simply cheating yourself. You can’t cut corners with this. If you’re not ready then that’s fine, but don’t go into it half-heartedly. If you’re ready to commit 100% to becoming a non-smoker no matter how much it hurts, how inconvenient it becomes or how frustrated you get… then the technique WILL work for you. You have my promise.
Here goes…
The rules are simple – follow them and you’ll succeed. Before we start I want you to decide how many cigarettes you currently smoke each day. Simply make that decision now and stick with it. You will not be able to change your mind once you read on.
The number of cigarettes I smoke each day has been ______
Guaranteed Stop Smoking Method
On your start day go and buy the number of cigarettes you would normally smoke in a day. You have already picked this number (see above). If for example you smoke 8 cigarettes each day you would buy a pack which contains at least the number you need, hence a pack of 10. If you smoke 20 each day then buy a pack of 20. If you smoke 40 a day then buy two packs of 20 etc.
The place you bought your cigarettes from is now ‘struck off’. You may never purchase cigarettes from that place again. Next time you buy cigarettes you will have to go somewhere else for them. Once you purchase cigarettes from that new place it too becomes ‘struck off’ and you may never buy cigarettes from there again.
Once you have purchased your cigarettes immediately open the pack(s) and remove any cigarettes excess to what you would normally smoke. So if you normally smoke 8 cigarettes and you buy a pack of 10, you would immediately open the pack and remove two. The cigarettes you remove are to be destroyed by you right away. Crush them in your hand and dispose of them. You are not permitted to give them to anyone else or store them no matter how wasteful you think it may be. If you normally smoke 20 and you buy a pack of 20 then there is no excess for you on the first day.
You may smoke the remaining cigarettes throughout the day as you choose. You may not accept cigarettes from other people or purchase additional cigarettes until the next day. Any cigarettes which remain un-smoked when you go to bed must be destroyed. I suggest flushing them down the toilet to discourage cheating. You may not carry over cigarettes to the following morning under any circumstances.
The next morning when you wake up you will find you have no cigarettes. If you need a cigarette then you’ll have to go out and buy some. However remember that you may not buy cigarettes from the same place(s) you have already since the start of the exercise. You will have to go somewhere new each and every time you purchase cigarettes. If you want to stop smoking – you’ll do it.
When you purchase your days supply of cigarettes, do as you did before and destroy any excess cigarettes. So if you picked 8 as being your daily consumption and you bought 10 – you’d destroy 2 straight away. Now you’re going to take an additional cigarette out and destroy that one as well. So now you’re down to 7 cigarettes today. See how you’re cutting down already! If you normally smoke 20 each day then the last time you bought a pack of 20 cigarettes there would have been no excess, thus none were destroyed. Well guess what – today you immediately take one out and destroy it. Today’s ration would be 19 and not 20.
As before, you can smoke them anytime in the day. You may not buy additional cigarettes nor are you allowed to accept them from other people. When you go to bed any un-smoked cigarettes get destroyed. The next morning (if you still want to smoke) you’ll have to find yet another place to buy your days cigarettes from.
The pattern repeats from last time. If you started on 8 per day and yesterday you were on 7, you buy a pack of 10 (as usual) and destroy enough to leave you with 6 cigarettes for the day. So in effect you’ll now have to make do with one cigarette less than you had the day before. This serves to make you choosier about when you want to savour the moment. If you started on 20 and yesterday you were allowed 19 then today you’re only allowed 18. Thus you immediately open the pack and destroy the first two cigarettes.
Let’s say this goes on for some time and the 20 a day smoker gets down to 10 cigarettes. It would make sense to drop from buying a 20 pack each day to a 10 pack each day. Sure that would make sense – but it doesn’t work that way. You still buy a 20 pack and destroy 11 of the cigarettes leaving you with 9 to smoke. Wasteful as it seems this actually costs no more than simply smoking 20 each day (which was what the person in this case was happy doing beforehand anyway). However, this sends a clear message to the subconscious part of the brain that throwing away money on cigarettes is a very wasteful pass time. This is what you want to achieve. You want your subconscious to grow to despise the waste associated with cigarettes. Why the Hell do you think I have you trekking all over the place finding somewhere new each day to buy cigarettes? It’s to associate hassle and inconvenience to cigarettes rather than the usual simple, accessible quick fix you’ve grown accustomed to. You WILL beat the addiction this way if you follow it through. I guarantee it.
So you continue the pattern of finding somewhere new to shop each day, you buy the same amount of cigarettes you always have and allow yourself one less than on the previous day. The others are destroyed by you as soon as you open the pack. You smoke the remaining cigarettes (if you so choose) and then come bedtime you personally destroy any un-smoked cigarettes.
This cycle continues until you get down to one cigarette per day. Whether you buy a ten pack, a twenty pack or two twenty packs… you destroy all but the one you are permitted. You still have to find a new place each day to get your cigarettes from… but I’m a generous soul so you can stick with one cigarette for as long as you feel the need to. So no matter how long it takes I’ll never take that last cigarette from you… YOU WILL.
I’d wager that the inconvenience and the financial waste is enough to break anyone’s smoking habit. So one morning you’ll wake up fancying a cigarette and think to yourself that it’s just not worth the hassle. Congratulations you’ve become a non-smoker.
