Most people you’ll encounter will be decent. However, you need to remain aware and streetwise to protect yourself from the minority that could potentially harm you. Essentially, protecting yourself generally boils down to common sense and good judgement rendering people and situations harmless before things get out of hand. You are responsible for your own safety and should take active measures to ensure you stay clear of danger.

Here are some common sense points to consider:

• Don’t give out your full name, home address, home phone number or any other sensitive personal information until you feel comfortable doing so.

• If you meet someone online use an anonymous messenger service like ‘windows messenger’ so that you can block contact with that person if you choose.

• When arranging an initial meeting ensure it’s somewhere public where there’s likely to be other people. Make your own transport arrangements both to and from the date. Don’t accept an invitation to pick you up from home or work until you feel comfortable.

• Let someone know where you are going, who you are meeting (and possibly their contact info) and arrange to check in by phone to let them know you’re ok.

• Be responsible with what and the amount you drink. Keep your eye on your drink and if you have the slightest feeling it may have been tampered with – leave it.

• Carry a personal alarm.

• Stay aware. Keep your eyes and ears open.

• Avoid taking shortcuts through dark or deserted areas. Stay in well lit, well populated areas whenever possible.

• Say “No” and mean it! A strong psychological stance goes a long way.

• Ensure your handbag is worn across your body where it’s more difficult to snatch. If a bag snatcher persists or threatens you – let him take it.
